Hokies Set Two School Records at the Rod McCravy Memorial
Senior Marlies Overbeeke breaks the Tech record in the mile and qualifies for the NCAA Championships
| January 31, 2004 Lexington, Ky. - The Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field teams had a record-setting day with two new school records and numerous outstanding personal performances during the second day of action at the Rod McCravy Memorial. Senior Marlies Overbeeke shattered her own school record in the mile as she finished third with a time of 4:44.97. Her previous mark was 4:46.39. With the record-setting performance, Overbeeke also provisionally qualifies for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Tech's other school record came in the women's pole vault as sophomore Jennifer Wade successfully cleared 11-6.25, finishing first in Saturday's competition. Teammates Abbey McGrath and Erin Mahony finished second and fourth, respectively, as both cleared 10-11.75. The women's squad also had a successful afternoon on the track with three Hokies qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships in the 800 meters. Overbeeke finished second in 2:14.60 followed by freshmen Heather Mullis and Meredith Brooks in third and fourth with times of 2:15.53 and 2:16.59. In the 3,000 meters Jessica Morris took third place (9:55.74) with Morgan Ekemo following closely behind in fourth (9:55.91). Sophomore Keosha Sanders held down the sprints as she took fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.74) and tied for fifth in the 60 meters (7.74). Ciera Ayangbile turned in a fourth place performance in the shot put with a personal best throw of 45-2.5 while fellow freshman Jennifer Glodowski was ninth with 42-3.5. Tech volunteer coach Cleopatra Borel won the competition with a heave of 59-0.75. The men's team had an equally successful meet as throwers Brian MacPhee and Ryan Norwood finished two-three in the shot put. MacPhee was second with a mark of 55-10.5 while Norwood was third with 54-10.5. On the track freshman David Clowney finished second in the 60 meters with a time of 6.98 while classmate Mike Hinton was eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 8.21. Junior Mike Lawson took fifth in the mile (4:11.84) and Adam Jury was seventh in the 800 meters (1:55.16). Also Tech's 4x400-meter relay team took third place with a time of 3:17.04. Complete results from the unscored Rod McCravy Memorial will be posted, as they become available from the University of Kentucky. The Virginia Tech track and field teams have next weekend off, but will return to action in two weeks with the second home meet of the season, the Virginia Tech Challenge, on Feb. 13-14, in Rector Field House. |
