Men in Fourth Place After Day One at the BIG EAST Meet

BIG EAST Championships Day One Results
 
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field teams opened up competition at the BIG EAST Championships today at Syracuse University's Carrier Dome. After five events, the men are in fourth place with 19 points, while the women are in ninth place with nine points through six events. Connecticut leads the men's field with 50 points, and defending champion Miami and Pittsburgh lead all women's teams with 40 points each.

Highlighting the men's action was sophomore Spyridon Jullien (Athens, Greece) who won his second BIG EAST weight throw title with a heave of 66-6.5. Juan Alba of Notre Dame was the next closest competitor with 59-3. Senior Brian MacPhee (Golden Lake, Ont.) was third in the event with a mark of 57-9.75, and sophomore Will Collins (Chesterfield, Va.) also scored in seventh place with a throw of 52-9.5. The men's only other scorer on the day was sophomore Ryan Gore (Leonardtown, Pa.) who cleared 15-3 to take eight place in the pole vault.

In qualifying action on the track, several Hokies qualified for tomorrow's finals, including freshman David Clowney (Delray Beach, Fla.) in the 60 meters with a preliminary and personal best time of 6.87. Senior Buck Grant (Centreville, Va.) qualified in the 400 meters with a time of 49.03. Mike Hinton (Burlington, N.C.) advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.21.

For the women, Kristen Callan (Monroe, N.Y.) was the individual scorer on the women's side, finishing fourth in the weight throw with a mark 59-7.5. The women's other four points came from the distance medley relay team of Morgan Ekemo (Eagle River, Alaska), Vicki Green (Chesapeake, Va.), Heather Mullis (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Jessica Morris (Coatesville, Pa.) that took fifth place with a season-best time of 11:50.42.

Also for the women, senior Marlies Overbeeke (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) will advance to tomorrow's 1,000 meter final after qualifying with a time of 2:52.03.

The BIG EAST Championships resume tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with the men's triple jump.
