BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's track and field team will be competing in its first outdoor meet of the season at the Weems Baskin Sprint Relays hosted by the University of South Carolina this weekend in Columbia, S.C.

Coach Lori Taylor's team is coming off an impressive indoor season. The Hokies won the Atlantic 10 indoor championship for the second time in three years. Tech finished tied for 16th at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

Tech will look to capture the A-10 outdoor title for a second year in a row. Led by juniors Brandi Smith (Portsmouth, Va.) and April Byrd (Fairfax, Va.), Tech will be strong in the jumps. Byrd is coming off an indoor season where she was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the triple jump. Senior Nikki Hunt (Blacksburg, Va.) will run the middle distance events along with sophomore Kimberlea Gibbs (Chester, Va.).
