March 21, 2002

The Virginia Tech Track and Field team will head to Columbia, S.C., this Friday to compete in the annual Weems Baskin Invitational on the campus of the University of South Carolina. More than 20 schools from across the country will be competing.

The meet kicks off Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. and will be continued Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Complete results can be found on South Carolina's website, www.uscsports.com.

This will be the first meet of the 2002 outdoor season for Tech as a team. Several of the Hokie throwers competed in the 49er Classic last weekend on the campus of UNC-Charlotte. Dee O'Connell, who redshirted the indoor season, had an excellent showing in her first meet of 2002. She broke her own school record in the javelin and finished in first place with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 151'05". January Williams also had a solid performance, taking second place in the shot put with a throw of 45'00.25".
