Tech Assistant Coaches Travel to Budapest for the IAAF Championships
Mary Jayne Harrelson and Cleopatra Borel will represent their countries in Hungary
| March 2, 2004 Blacksburg, Va. - Virginia Tech track and field coaches Mary Jayne Harrleson and Cleopatra Borel will take to the international stage this weekend as they compete in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Indoor Championships, March 5-7, in Budapest, Hungary. Harrelson, an assistant distance coach, qualified for the World Championships in the 800 meters by becoming a finalist at the USA Indoor Championships this past weekend. Harrelson finished fifth in the race with a time of 2:05.77. Her best time this season was 2:03.74 at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 13, in Fayetteville, Ark. The United States' other representative in the 800 meters will be Jen Toomey of Salem, Mass. Borel, a volunteer assistant throws coach, will represent her native Trinidad and Tobago in the shot put at the World Championships. Borel is currently ranked fourth in world with a throw of 63-11, set at the Virginia Tech Challenge on Feb. 14. Borel holds the Trinidad and Tobago national record and finished sixth in last summer's Pan-American Games. Harrelson is scheduled to compete in the preliminary heats of the 800 meters at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, while the shot put preliminaries are to begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the finals at 5:10 p.m. |
