April 7, 1999

BLACKSBURG, Va. -Jennifer Cook, a junior on the Virginia Tech women's track and field team, has been selected to attend the NCAA Foundations Leadership Conference.

Cook, a sprinter from I.C. Norcom H.S., in Portsmouth, Va., was among 300 student-athletes selected to attend the conference at Disney's Wide World of Sports and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Since enrolling at Virginia Tech three years ago, Cook has taken on a leadership role on Coach Lori Taylor's team.

"Jennifer has really taken advantage of the opportunites available to her as a student-athelete" Coach Taylor said. "She has been a leader from day one and has helped to lay the foundation in our program for the younger girls to follow."

Derita Ratcliffe, Virginia Tech's Assistant Athletic Director for Student Services, says Cook is very deserving of appointment.

"Jennifer Cook is an excellent representative for Virginia Tech to the NCAA Leadership Conference," Ratcliffe said. "She represents the diversity of our athletics program and it shows that the selection committee recognizes a varied picture of leadership."

The 1999 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference will focus on topics identified during the nomination process as well as topics recommened by the members of the Divisions I, II and III NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committees who serve as an Association-wide voice for student athlete issues.

The conference will be held May 31-June 4, 1999.
