Hokies Set Seven School Records at the SeaRay Relays
Tech wraps-up an extremely successful two-day meet
| April 10, 2004 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field teams capped off an extremely successful SeaRay relays this afternoon on the University of Tennessee's Tom Black Track. Today the women set school records in the shuttle-hurdle relay and 4x800-meter relay, while the men set records in the 4x800-meter relay, shot put and javelin. In action yesterday, Tech set records in the women's weight throw and 4x1,500-meter relay. For the men, junior Ryan Norwood (Cheyenne, Wyo.) broke his own record in the shot put with a throw of 58-9.5 (17.92m), finishing fourth in the invitational section. Sophomore Jacobus Smit (Pretoria, South Africa) improved his school record in the javelin with a third-place throw of 237-9 (72.46m). The men's other record came in the 4x800-meter relay as the team of Adam Jury (Catskill, N.Y.), Duncan Vick (Richmond, Va.), Alex Johnson (Phoenix, N.Y.) and Buck Grant (Centreville, Va.) broke the 22-year-old record with a time of 7:30.12, finishing fourth. The women's 4x800-meter team of Heather Mullis (Virginia Beach, Va.), Jessica Morris (Coatesville, Pa.), Morgan Ekemo (Eagle River, Alaska) and Marlies Overbeeke (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) etched their names into Tech's record book with a sixth-place time of 8:53.95. Morris, Ekemo and Overbeeke were also on yesterday's record-setting 4x1,500-meter relay team. Tech's other record came in the shuttle-hurdle relay where the combination of Jackie Nicholson (Clayton, N.J.), Shamane Onwudiachi (Laurel, Md.), Keosha Sanders (Stafford, Va.) and Saskia Triesscheijn (Berlin, Germany) put up a time of 59.43, finishing sixth. Yesterday's school records included freshman Kristen Callan in the weight throw with a mark of 184-0 (56.09) and the 4x1,500-meter relay team of Ekemo, Samantha Ference (Clifton, Va.), Morris and Overbeeke with a time of 18:36.43. The Hokies will be back in action this week for their west-coast trip to the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut Calif. Competition at Mt. SAC begins on April 16 and continues through April 18. |
