Hunter, Hay and Byrd Receive A-10 Honors

Men's, women's track & field in action this weekend.

April 14, 1999

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Three members of the Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field teams received Atlantic 10 honors for their performances from this past week.

Brian Hunter, a freshman from Chesapeake, Va., received the men's Rookie of the Week honor for his performance in the pole vault. Hunter finished third at the Sea Ray Relays by breaking his own school record of 17-02.25 with a vault of 17-05. Hunter's new record is the best so far this season in the A-10 and more than two feet better than second place. Hunter has qualified provisionally for the NCAA and will attempt to better his record this weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

April Byrd (Fairfax, Va.) was named the A-10 Women's Performer of the Week. Byrd posted conference-best marks in the triple and long jumps at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. Byrd is now qualified for the ECAC Championships in both events.

Damali Hay (Rosedale, N.Y.) was named the A-10 Women's Rookie of the Week as she qualified for the ECAC Championships in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Hay holds first place on the conference list in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.85 and is second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.51. Hay missed the school record in the 200-meter dash by only one one-hundredth of a second.

The men's and women's track and field teams will be in action this weekend as they will host the Virginia Tech Invitational at the Johnson-Miller Outdoor Track Complex beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday. Joining Hunter at the Mt. SAC Relays will be hammer thrower Erick Kingston (Stafford, Va.), hurdlers Chris Stokes (Canton, Ohio), Justin Davis (Silver Spring, Md.) and the men's 4x400-meter relay team.
