PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field teams are currently in seventh and ninth place, respectively, after the first day of competition at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championships in Piscataway, N.J. The men scored 11 points through seven events while the women recorded 16 points through eight events during the first day. Rutgers leads the men's field with 78.5 points while Miami is tops among the women with 47 points.

Tech junior Ryan Norwood (Cheyenne, Wyo.) made history in the shot put as he claimed first place with a meet record throw of 60-10.5 (18.55m). The previous record of 60-6.75 (18.46m) was set by four-time BIG EAST Champion Ray Wilks of Connecticut in 1999. Norwood's throw also betters his previous school record by over two feet. Teammate Will Collins (Chesterfield, Va.) also scored in the event, finishing eighth with a throw of 51-4.25 (15.65m).

The women's points came from a more diverse series of events with heptathlete Saskia Triesscheijn (Berlin, Germany) finishing third in the event with 5,178 points. Junior Jessica Morris was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:54.23. In the shot put, freshman Ciera Ayangbile (Fulton, Ill.) finished fifth with a personal best throw of 46-5.5 (14.16m). Fellow freshman Heather Mullis (Virginia Beach, Va.) also qualified for tomorrow's 800 meter final with a preliminary time of 2:11.09.

The Hokies return to action tomorrow, May 2, to finish day two of competition at the BIG EAST relays. Complete results from the second day's action will be released as they become available.
