Men Finish Fifth, Women Ninth at the BIG EAST
Fludd, Jullien, Mondschein and Norwood all win BIG EAST titles
| May 2, 2004 PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Virginia Tech men's and women's teams capped off one of its most successful BIG EAST campaigns in history as the men finished fifth while the women were ninth at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships today in Piscataway, N.J. The women's ninth place finish is their highest in the BIG EAST, while the men's four individual champions is also a Tech record. The men finished with 63 point as Notre Dame won its second consecutive championship with 172.5 points. The women accumulated 44 points as Miami ran away with its sixth consecutive title with 160 points. Individual champions for the Hokies included junior Jason Fludd (Stafford, Va.) in the triple jump at 50-11.5 (15.53m), sophomores Spyridon Jullien (Athens, Greece) in the hammer throw at 223-7 (68.14m) and Brian Mondschein (Hummelstown, Pa.) in the pole vault at 17-0.75 (5.20m). Junior Ryan Norwood (Cheyenne, Wyo.) won the shot put yesterday with a meet record of 60-10.5 (18.55m). Jullien and Mondschein's victories are their second consecutive conference championships as both won by significant margins as Jullien bettered the field by 26 feet while Mondschein's nearest competitor was foot behind. Other scorers for the men included Jacobus Smit (Pretoria, South Africa) finishing second in the javelin with a throw of 214-4 (65.32m). Also in the field events, Ryan Gore (Leonardtown, Pa.) finished fourth in the pole vault with a height of 15-7 (4.75m) and Idikoro Eradiri (Ashburn, Va.) was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 48-0.5 (14.64m). The men also recorded five points in the relay events as the 4x400-meter team of Fludd, Jordan Rajan (Downingtown, Pa.), Adam Jury (Catskill, N.Y.) Buck Grant (Centreville, Va.) finished sixth with a time of 3:18.29. The 4x800-meter squad of Jury, Duncan Vick (Richmond, Va.), Alex Johnson (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Grant was seventh in 7:42.07. The women's showing in day two was highlighted by freshman Kristen Callan's (Monroe, N.Y.) second place finish in the hammer throw. Callan's throw of 189-8 (57.82m) broke her school record for the fifth time this season. On the track, Tech was led by senior Marlies Overbeeke (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) who was the runner-up in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:24.85. Freshman Heather Mullis (Virginia Beach, Va.) made quite the BIG EAST debut as she finished fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.73. The women also picked up points in the relays as the 4x800-meter team of Meredith Brooks (Fairfax, Va.), Jessica Morris (Coatesville, Pa.), Overbeeke and Mullis finished third with a time of 8:53.99. The 4x400-meter team of Jackie Nicholson (Clayton, N.J.), Vicki Green (Chesapeake, Va.), Shamane Onwudiachi (Laurel, Md.) and Keosha Sanders (Stafford, Va.) was seventh in 3:50.97. The BIG EAST Championship closes out the regular season for Tech as the team takes next weekend off for finals. Select members of the team will return for competition on May 14-15 in the Georgia Tech Invitational as they prepare for the NCAA East Regional Championship in Gainesville, Fla., on May 28-29. |
