Tech Men successful at NCAA East Regional
Hokies have strong performances in field events

FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men's track team had another successful day at the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Championships at George Mason Stadium. Tech's Spyridon Jullien qualified for the NCAA Championships in two weeks with a third place finish in the hammer throw.

In the shot put competition, Ryan Norwood (So., Cheyenne, Wyo.) finished eighth with a toss of 17.28m while teammate Brian MacPhee (Golden Lake, Ontario) placed 14th after a toss of 16.62m. Jacobus Smit (Fr., Pretoria, South Africa) had the best finish of the day placing sixth in the javelin with a throw of 66.89m. In other field results, Marcus Tepaske (Freehold, N.J.) was 16th in the pole vault at 4.76m while Brian Mondschein (So., Hummelstown, Pa.) did not place in the event

On the women's side, Marlies Overbeeke (Jr., Rotterdam, Netherlands), ranked ninth in the East region in the 1,500 meter run, finished 11th in the 1500 meter final with a time of 4:30.41 while Kim Milbourn (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) did not finish in the 3000m steeplechase. Tech's women's 4x400m relay team consisting of Marie Giles (Fr., Hampton, Va.), Danielle Gaddy (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.), Vicki Green (So., Chesapeake, Va.) and Shamane Onwudiachi (So., Laurel, Md.) finished 22nd.

Tech's next action will be at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, June 11-14, in Sacramento, Calif.
