BLACKSBURG, Va. - It was the final Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships for Virginia Tech and the Hokies no doubt left the conference with something to remember as both the men's and women's team recorded solid victories Sunday at Virginia Tech.
The women's team race remained close until late in the day when Virginia Tech placed two, three and four in the 200-meter dash to seal the win with 194 points. Rhode Island earned runner-up honors with 157 points and Massachusetts rounded out the top three with 119 points.
The Virginia Tech men once again ran away with the title scoring 235 points, but a close second-place battle formed between three schools down the stretch. Massachusetts and Rhode Island swapped positions over the late stages and ended up in a tie score of 133 for second. St. Joseph's finished 21 back with 112 points.
On the men's side the Hokies won 12 events led by the meet's Outstanding Performer Kevin Walker. Walker, who shared the honor with St. Joseph's Karl Savage, won the 110 hurdles in an NCAA qualifying time of 13.97 and the 400 hurdles in a meet record 51.47. André Davis was Tech's other multi-event winner taking the 100, 200 and running on the winning 4x100-relay. Davis' time of 20.95 in the 200 was a meet record.
Ali Najjar picked up the Outstanding Rookie Performer honor for the men after winning the 800 in a meet record and IC4A qualifier of 1:49.91 in addition to running a leg on the fourth-place 4x800 relay. Other winners for Tech included Ernest Wilford in the triple jump, who set a meet record with a leap of 48'02" and Adam Bowser in the decathlon
The women were able to pull away in the latter stages of the meet thanks to a winning effort by the 4x400-relay team and several second-place finishes. Lynette Hopkins won the 400 in an ECAC qualifier of 55.73 and anchored the 4x400 to a season best time of 3:48.72 and an improved ECAC standing. April Byrd capped off her conference career with a win in the triple jump after taking the long jump on Saturday. St. Joseph's Christine Kane earned women's Outstanding Performer and Dayton's Tara Storage captured Outstanding Rookie.
Tech's Roosevelt Lofton won the Coach of the Year award for the women in his first year as the Hokies' head coach and Russ Whitenack of Virginia Tech captured his fourth straight Men's Coach of the Year.
Seven meet records were broken during day two of the men's competition and five fell in the women's events.
