November 22, 2004

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Tasmin Fanning, the 2004 VHSL AA cross country runner-up, signed a national letter of intent to compete in the 2005-06 cross country and track seasons at Virginia Tech during the early signing period on Nov. 10-12, announced the Hokie track staff.

"Tasmin adds another focused and talented competitor to our team. She will be a tremendous help in achieving our goals next year. I am very excited to be working with her; she has the potential to be a standout distance runner at the NCAA level and beyond," stated head cross country coach Ben Thomas.

Fanning, a senior at Western Albermarle High School in Charlottesville, led the cross country team to three AA Virginia state titles and the track team to six AA state championships.

Individually, Fanning is the 2004 Jefferson District and Region II cross country champion. She also won the Fork Union, Woodberry Forest and Charles Lauck Invitationals this year.

At the AA Virginia state cross country championships, Fanning claimed the runner-up spot this year and was third in 2003.

Her track accomplishments include being a four-time AA Virginia state champion in the 4x800m relay, an all-state performer 13 times for the indoor and outdoor seasons and Nike Indoor Classic All-American for her fourth place showing in the 800m.

Fanning holds the 800m, 4x400m relay, 4x800m relay and the distance medley relay records at Western Albermarle.

Her personal records (PRs) include a 2:14.37 in the 800m, 5:02.09 in the 1,600m and a 18:33.78 in the 5,000m.
