Tech Opens 2002-2003 Indoor Season
MacPhee, Williams capture first in shot put
| December 9, 2002 LEXINGTON, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's and women's indoor track and field season got underway Saturday, as five Hokie throwers competed in the VMI Invitational held in Lexington, Va. Newcomer Brian MacPhee and senior January Williams turned in first-place performances in the men's and women's shot put. On the men's side, the Hokies captured four of the top six spots in the shot put. MacPhee (1st) was followed by sophomore Ryan Norwood (2nd), and freshmen William Collins (5th) and John Fallone (6th). Williams was the lone woman competing for Tech. MacPhee (Golden Lake, Ontario) set a school record in the men's shot put with a toss of 57-05.00. The record, previously held by Barry White, was the longest-standing indoor record at Tech. MacPhee, a transfer from UNC-Asheville, beat the old mark by six and a half inches. Norwood (Cheyenne, Wyo.) grabbed second with a toss of 54-07.50, which was a personal best. Collins (Chesterfield, Va.) and Fallone (Rochester, N.Y.) also set career bests with throws of 49-07.00 and 49-06.50 respectively. All five men qualified for the BIG EAST Indoor Conference Champions to be held in February. Williams (Burke, Va.) began her senior season by qualifying for the BIG EAST championships. Williams' toss of 47-07.50 earned her a fourth-straight trip to the conference meet. The Hokies will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 11, at the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va. |
