Hokies Remain In Top 10
Tech is eighth in the Trackwire 25 and the USTFCCCA poll
May 9, 2006

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's track and field team remained in the top 10 for the second consecutive week in the two polls that are the most prominent in the sport.

The No. 8 position garnered by the team in the Trackwire 25 power rankings for the second week in a row is the highest the team has ever been. Of the six power rankings that have been released for the outdoor season, the Hokies have been in the top 10 for five of them.

Tech entered the top 10 at No. 9 on April 10 and has not been ranked below No. 10 since that time. On April 17, the Hokies were No. 10 before moving to No. 9 for the second time in school history on April 24. May 1 marked the highest the program had ever been, when it earned the No. 8 ranking.

Tech is the second Atlantic Coast Conference team in the rankings. Florida State is No. 1 with 50 projected points at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Hokies, tied with BYU, are projected to score 23 points at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The two are the only ones in the Trackwire 25 from the ACC.

The Trackwire 25 is a projection of how teams could finish at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships with meet scores.

The Hokies continued their ascent to the top of the polls, climbing to the No. 8 spot for the first time in school history in the USTFCCCA poll. When the poll was released last week, it had Tech at No. 10, just as it had on April 11. Prior to today's release, the Hokies' highest ranking was No. 10.

Tech returns to action this week at the Georgia Tech Invitational, which is being held May 12-13 in Atlanta, Ga.
