Rod McCravy Memorial

 

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The indoor track and field season is just three meets old, and the Virginia Tech Hokies have already shot down 10 school records after four more fell Saturday at the University of Kentucky's Rod McCravy Memorial.

Newcomer Justin Clickett, who threw an unofficial school record in the shot put while unattached back in December, made it official on Saturday with a first-place toss of 19.03m (62'5.25"). The NCAA provisional mark breaks Ryan Norwood's throw of 18.74m (61'5.75") from 2005.

In the women's shot put, senior Ciera Ayangbile set the school-best for the third time in as many competitions, this time recording a second-place throw of 16.36m (53'8.25"), which is also an NCAA provisional mark.

Patrice Potts continued her strong start as she broke her own record in the 60m dash by 1/100^th of a second, running a 7.44 to take third place. It was her second NCAA provisional mark of the season, as she also met the standard in the 55m dash.

The final record of the day came from freshman Kristi Castlin. One week after setting the 55m hurdles school-best, she completed the 60m hurdles in a third-place 8.44, besting Keosha Sanders' 2004 Tech record of 8.59. If it weren't for Castlin's performance, fellow freshman Queen Harrison would've set the new mark, as she recorded a seventh-place 8.57.

In other sprinting events, Potts recorded a personal-best in the 200m after running a fourth-place 23.96. Sherlenia Green took eighth in the 400m (54.80) and Asia Washington placed seventh in the 800m (2:14.38). In the 4x400m relay, Washington, Potts, Harrison and Green just missed out on last week's school record after teaming up for a second-place time of 3:41.28. On the men's side, freshman Mike Fitzgerald had a busy day, competing in the 60m (7.24), the 200m (22.45) and the 400m (49.86).

Adam Bingaman and Joe Samaniuk tied for fifth in the men's pole vault, as each scaled 4.90m (16'0.75"). Former Tech All-American and current volunteer coach Brian Mondschein won the event competing unattached. He vaulted 5.50m (18'00.50"), narrowly missing out on his school record of 5.52m.

In Friday's action, Kristen Callan took third in the women's weight throw with an NCAA provisional heave of 19.43m (63'9"). Matej Muza finished sixth for the men with a mark of 19.47m (63'10.5").

In the women's pole vault, Erin Mahony set an ACC season-high with a height of 3.85m (12'7.5") while placing second. Third place went to Ashley Early, who vaulted 3.75m (12'3.5"). Abbey McGrath and Caitlin Thornley took fifth and sixth, respectively, as each vaulted 3.60m (11'9.75").

Idikoro Eradiri, who returned to the team after taking last season off, placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 14.96m (49'1"). Freshman Gary Hill high-jumped 1.88m (6'2") in his first event as a Hokie. Multi-event performer Gunild Kreb's best effort came in a 12^th-place performance in the women's long jump.

The Hokie squad will split up next weekend, as the pole vaulters will travel to East Tennessee State, and the sprinters and throwers will head to Penn State.
