Women's track captures Sykes-Sabok Challenge Cup
Men finish fifth at Penn State meet
February 10, 2007
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Virginia Tech track and field team continued its all-around success at Penn State's Sykes-Sabok Challenge Cup on Saturday, as the women held on to take first place, and the men climbed up to finish fifth following a tenth-place showing on Friday.
Seven more NCAA provisional marks were recorded to give Tech a total of 15 for the weekend, while Saturday also saw the Hokies win four more individual events and set two more school records.
The women's team wrapped up a total of 139.5 points to capture the meet, 16.5 points ahead of Penn State's 123. The throwers had a strong showing, as Brittany Pryor claimed first in the shot put with a personal-best and school record toss of 16.52m (54'2.5"). Ciera Ayangbile, the previous record-holder, took second with a distance of 15.75m (51'8.25"). Both throws were good for NCAA provisional marks. Freshman Erika Schroeder placed fifth after recording a personal-best heave of 15.11m (49'7").
The 3000m was also a big plus for the women's scoring effort, as three Hokies placed in the top five. Tasmin Fanning registered a personal-best and NCAA provisional mark with her second-place time of 9:26.18. Jessica Fanning also turned in a personal-best with her third-place mark of 9:39.35, while Natalie Sherbak finished fifth in 9:47.10.
The second school record of the day - and fifth of the meet - came from Patrice Potts in the 200m. She beat teammate Britni Spruill's old mark to take second place in 23.67 and record an NCAA provisional mark in the process. Sherlenia Green placed sixth in the event with a personal-best 24.20, while Spruill took 10th in 24.63.
The final women's provisional mark came in the 400m, where Green ran a 54.07 to place fourth. Shakirra Pinnock ran a season-best 55.20 to take eighth.
In other women's events, Asia Washington finished seventh in the 800m in 2:12.11, and the 4x400m relay team took fourth in 3:43.87.
After only scoring seven points on four entries in Friday's events, the men's team was much more active on Saturday and ended up in fifth with 73 points. Ohio State won the men's competition with 107 points.
All four pole vaulters who jumped for the men scored, as the Hokies claimed four of the top six spots in that event. Joe Samaniuk and Thorsten Mueller each recorded NCAA provisional marks with heights of 5.20m (17'0.75"). Samaniuk took first place based on his fewer amount of misses. Adam Bingaman followed in fourth with a mark of 5.00m (16'4.75"), and Jared Jodon claimed sixth with a leap of 4.90m (16'0.75").
Much like the women, the men's performance in the 3000m was key to their success. James Scheiner set a personal best to win the event in 8:20.83. Devin Cornwall (8:24.93) and Rider Clauss (8:28.89) followed in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The other men's win came in the shot put, where Justin Clickett tossed a provisional mark of 18.44m (60'6"). Other point scorers for Tech were Idikoro Eradiri, who placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 15.28m (50'1.75"), and Billy Berlin, who crossed the line fourth in the 800m with a personal-best time of 1:50.21.
The Hokies will host the Virginia Tech Challenge Feb. 16-17, which is the last meet before the ACC Championships Feb. 22-24.
