Women's track and field wins ACC Championship
Men's team finishes sixth

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Virginia Tech women's track and field team turned in a dominating performance on Saturday to claim the 2007 ACC Indoor Championships, defeating second-place Miami by a score of 136-99. It is the second-ever ACC team championship for Virginia Tech, joining the Hokie football team from back in 2004. The men's squad finished in sixth-place with 50.5 points, 1.5 points ahead of rival Virginia. The meet was held on the campus of Clemson University.
For the meet, the men's and women's teams featured four individual champions and 23 individual All-ACC performances. On Saturday, sophomore Patrice Potts won the women's 60m dash, redshirt sophomore Brittany Pryor claimed the women's shot put, and sophomore Thorsten Mueller captured the men's pole vault. Redshirt junior Erin Mahony won the women's pole vault on Friday.
The women entered the final day of competition with an 18-point lead over the Hurricanes, and more than doubled it thanks to 14 different scorers throughout the day. Shot putters Brittany Pryor and Ciera Ayangbile kicked things off by claiming the top two spots in that event. After taking fourth in the weight throw on Friday, Pryor captured the shot put with a first-place throw of 15.71m (51'6.5"). Ayangbile earned All-ACC honors with a second-place heave of 15.61m (51'2.75").
The freshmen duo of Kristi Castlin and Queen Harrison got the sprinters' day started with second and fifth-place finishes, respectively, in the 60m hurdles. Castlin broke her own school record with an All-ACC time of 8.21 seconds, while Harrison crossed the line in 8.57 seconds.
Sherlenia Green and Shakirra Pinnock then got into the act in the 400m. Green earned All-ACC honors in the event for the second consecutive year with a second-place time of 54.91, while Pinnock took eighth in 56.07.
Potts earned her ACC title in the 60m dash with a tape-breaking mark of 7.40, after also recording the top time in the prelims a day earlier. Britni Spruill placed fourth in 7.53.
Potts then garnered All-ACC honors in the 200m, finishing second in 24.17. Spruill turned in another fourth-place finish, crossing the line in 24.48, and Green chipped in three points with her sixth-place time of 24.64.
The final women's All-ACC performance came from the 4x400m relay team, which combined for a time of 3:42.54 to finish third. Other point scorers for the Hokies included Tasmin Fanning, who took fourth in the 3000m in 9:27.50, and Asia Washington, who placed fifth in the 800m in 2:10.50.
The men jumped two spots from their eighth-place standing on Friday to end up in sixth. Florida State won the title for the fifth-straight year.
The highlight of the day for the men was Mueller's individual title in the pole vault. The newcomer from Germany vaulted a personal-and-facility-record 5.42m (17'9.25") to win the event, and the mark currently stands as the third-best in school history. Senior Joe Samaniuk earned All-ACC honors with a third-place jump of 5.12 (16'9.5"). Adam Bingaman (t-4th) and Jared Jodon (8th) contributed to the scoring effort with vaults of 5.12m (16'9.5") and 4.82m (15'9.75"), respectively.
The other All-ACC effort for the men came from Justin Clickett, who ranked second in the shot put with a toss of 18.91m (62'0.5"). He also earned an all-conference nod on Friday for his second-place mark in the weight throw. Finishing eighth in the shot put was freshman Igor Misljenovic, who threw a season-best 16.16m (53'0.25").
Other point-scoring efforts for the men included Idikoro Eradiri's sixth-place triple jump of 14.58m (53'0.25"), and Billy Berlin's sixth-place time of 4:07.00 in the mile run.
Tech will host the Last Chance Invitational on Saturday, March 3, which is scheduled to begin at noon.
