LYNCHBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech opened its indoor track & field season with 11 pole vaulters competing in the Liberty Kickoff Invitational on Saturday at the Tolsma Track Center in Lynchburg, Va.

Redshirt freshman Kelly Phillips took second place with a personal-record vault of 12'5.5" (3.80m). Ashley Early competed as an unattached competitor and earned first place with a personal-best height of 13'7.25 (4.15m). Erin Mahony was unattached as well and achieved an identical 12'5.5" (3.80m) height, but finished in third place behind Phillips because she needed more attempts.

As an unattached competitor, Caitlin Thornley tied with redshirt sophomore Elise Birnbaum at 11'11.75" (3.65m). Redshirt sophomore Diana Sciambi rounded out the Hokie effort with a 10'11.75" (3.35m) height for sixth place.

Yavgeniy Olhovsky finished as the runner up in the men's competition with a 16'4.75" (5.00m) height, while freshman Hunter Hall tied for third place with a personal-record performance of 15'11" (4.85m). Jared Jodon and Joe Davis finished at the same height as Hall but took more attempts. Jodon took fifth place while Davis earned sixth place with a personal-best effort. Freshman Mike Miller used a new personal-record effort of 14'11" (4.55m) to finish 11th. Tech graduate and volunteer coach Brian Mondeschein took the event title with a 17'6.5" (5.35m) vault.

The Hokies host the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12, 2008, in Rector Field House.
