Current Tech sophomore vaulters Jared Jodon and Yavjeniy Olhovsky led the way by tying for third and fourth place in the individual standings, respectively. Jodon cleared a height of 16'6.75" (5.05m), while Olhovsky was at 16'5.5" (5.02m). Jodon, a Uniontown, Pa., native, established a new personal best by .10 meters. His former personal record of 16'2.75" (4.95m) was set at the Golden West Track & Field meet for Laurel Highlands High School.
A trio of freshmen turned in solid performances for the Hokies, as well. Hunter Hall registered a sixth-place finish with a 15'11.75" (4.87m) performance. Hall was followed by classmate Joe Davis, who cleared an identical height. Michael Miller was 12th at 14'6" (4.42m).
In fact, the top seven places in the event were taken by either current Virginia Tech student-athletes or alumni.
Current volunteer pole vault coach and Tech graduate Brian Mondschein won the event with a height of 17'5.5" (5.32m), while Tech alum Joe Samaniuk was the runner-up at 16'11.5" (5.17m) and Adam Bingaman placed fifth at 16'5.5" (5.02m).
The Penn State National Invitational begins Friday, January 25, at the Ashenfelter Multi-Sport Facility in State College, Pa.
