Phillips set a new meet and facility record in the pole vault by clearing a 13'6.5" (4.13m) height for first place to also provisionally qualify for the national championships. Sophomore Elise Birnbaum also recorded a personal best with a 12'8" (3.86m) height for third place, while redshirt freshman Diana Sciambi 11'0.25" (3.36m) took runner-up honors in the open section.
In the women's 200-meter race, Britni Spruill took the event title with an NCAA provisional qualifying performance of 23.76. Kristi Castlin followed with a personal-record time of 24.40 for ninth place, while Patrice Potts came in 11th place at 24.63.
Tech's 4x400-meter relay of Asia Washington, Spruill, Shakirra Pinnock and Queen Harrison placed third behind host Penn State and Tennessee by posting a time of 3:40.70. The performance stands as the second-fastest in school history, only .85 seconds behind the current school record set last season.
Harrison finished fifth in the 400-meter dash, crossing the tape in 55.29 while Pinnock completed the race in 57.29 for 11th. Washington was the lone Tech athlete in the 800-meter race, registering a time of 2:11.23 to earn 11th place.
Brittany Pryor finished second in the women's shot put with a mark of 52'7.25" (16.03m) that was just one inch short of the eventual champion. Regardless, Pryor's effort topped the provisional qualifying mark by more than two feet. Ciera Ayangbile followed in third place with a 50'6.75" (15.41m) toss and Erika Schroeder was sixth with a 48'8.25" (14.84m) effort.
Ebenezer Amegashle tied for fifth place in the first heat (29th overall) of the men's 400-meter dash, with a time of 51.39. In the 200-meter open race, Amegashle finished in 22.86 for 26th.
The Hokies host their second indoor meet of the season, the Virginia Tech Elite meet, all day Friday-Saturday, Feb. 8 and 9, in Rector Field House.
