Castlin sets another 60m hurdle school record

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Kristi Castlin established another school and personal best in the 60-meter hurdles to lead the Virginia Tech Track & field team on the second day of competition at the VT Elite Saturday in Rector Field House.

The Hokies set two new school records on the day with four personal-record performances in addition to several season-best efforts.

Castlin reset the school record in the invitational section of the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.07 second effort, which automatically qualified her for the NCAA Championships for the second time this season. Castlin initially set her school and personal record last season with an 8.09 effort late last month at the Penn State National Invitational. Teammate Queen Harrison automatically qualified in the event last evening with a personal-record time of 8.13 seconds.

Tech's women's 4x400-meter relay of Patrice Potts, Harrison, Asia Washington and Castlin also set a new school record and provisionally qualified for the national championships with a 3:38.62 time.

Harrison provisionally qualified for the national meet in the 400-meter dash with her top time of the season, a 53.97 second effort that earned runner-up honors. Freshman Jessica Trapeni finished 13th in the mile with a season-best 5:21.07 effort.

In the field, Kelly Phillips won the invitational section of the pole vault with a 13'3.5" (14.05m) effort. Erin Mahony competed unattached and finished third after clearing a height of 12'5.5" (3.80m), while Elise Birnbaum took seventh place with a 11'11.75" (3.65m) height. Ciera Ayangbile was Tech's top finisher in the shot put with a third-place mark of 49'8.25" (15.14m), follwoed by Erika Schroeder's 44'10.75" (13.68m) mark that placed seventh.

Ryan Witt and Phil Padilla both registered top-five finishes in the open section of the mile. Witt crossed the finish line in 4:19.35, while Padilla set a personal record by completing the event in 4:19.99. Chris Padilla followed closely with a seventh place, completing the race in 4:22.18. A quartet of Hokies took spots nine through 12: Chris Walizer was ninth in 4:25.80, Rider Clauss finished 10th in 4:26.96, Kyle Guglielmo was 11th in 4:30.05 and in 12th place was Alex Nissen with a season-best time of 4:32.6 seconds.

The Hokies also got solid efforts in the distance races. James Scheiner registered a team-high finish of 8:29.02 for third place in the 3,000-meter run, while Paul LaPenna finished as the runner-up in the invitational section of the mile with a season-best time of 4:10.65.

Ebenezer Amegashle placed 10th in the invitational section of the 400-meter dash with a season-best 51.23 second effort. In the 800-meter race, Eddie Judge followed in 18th with a 1:57.15 time and Kieran Lee was 23rd (1:58.56). Freshman Nick McLaughlin registered a 10th-place time of 1:54.62 in the 800-meter race.

The Hokie men got impressive performances in the field events throughout the day. Cedric Hudson took first place in his flight of the long jump with a season-best mark of 22'4.5" (6.82m) to claim ninth place overall by more than four inches.

Yavgeniy Olhovsky earned a third-place finish in the invitational section of the pole vault with a 17'4.50" (5.30m) height, while Jared Jodon took seventh after clearing a personal record of 17'0.75" (5.20m). Joe Davis was ninth with a height of 16'6.75" (5.05m). Igor Mislenovic placed sixth in the shot put with a 55'11.75" (17.06m) mark.

Tech continues its indoor season on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23 at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
