The No. 11 Tech women's team leaned on several solid performances throughout the day in the field events. Ciera Ayangbile and Erika Schroeder took the first two spots in the women's shot put. Ayangbile claimed the event title with a mark of 50'4.75" (15.36m), while Schroeder earned runner-up honors with a 49'1" (14.96m) mark.
Kelly Phillips earned third place in the women's pole vault with a height of 13'2.5 (4.03m), while Elise Birnbaum followed in fourth by clearing a personal-best height of 12'9.5" (3.90m). Diana Sciambi tied for ninth place at a personal-best height of 11'7.75" (3.55m). Erin Mahony competed as an unattached athlete and finished as the runner-up with a 13'2.5" (4.03m).
On the track, Tech's freshman represented the Hokies well with a pair of top performances in the distance events. Freshman Lindsey King used a personal-best time of 10:42.12 to finish 17th in the 3,000-meter race, while Jessica Trapeni also turned in a 15th-place finish in the mile with a season-best performance of 5:16.38.
Jackie Merrick took 29th place in the 800-meter race with a season-best time of 2:21.44, while Megan Fuson followed in her season debut in the event with a 34th place with a time of 2:22.40.
The Tech men's team was led by a solid core of runners in the mile. James Scheiner took fourth place with a time of 4:10.54. Phil Padilla joined Scheiner in the top 10 with a 4:14.25 effort, while Chris Padilla took 14th place with a time of 4:15.67. Ryan Witt and Eddie Judge took spots 16 and 17, respectively. Witt was 16th with a time of 4:16.16 and Judge earned 17th in 4:16.31. Rider Clauss took 20th (4:17.79) and Kyle Guglielmo followed in 24th (4:18.52). Billy Berlin set a new personal best and beat Tech's school record as an unattached competitor with his first-place performance of 4:05.35.
A pair of freshmen competed for Tech in the 800-meter dash. Nick McLaughlin took 12th place with a time of 1:55.68, and Chris Walizer finished in 1:57.84 for 25th place. Freshman sprinter Ebenezer Amegashle was the sole competitor for Tech in the 400-meter dash, he finished 40th with a season-best time of 50.98 seconds.
In the shot put on the men's side, Justin Clickett took first place in his season debut as an unattached competitor with a 60'4" (18.39m). Igor Misljenovic took fourth place with a season-best effort of 56'5.75" (17.21m).
The ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by North Carolina, begin Thursday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
