DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman Dorotea Habazin set a school record in the hammer throw to lead the Virginia Tech track & field team on the first day of the Duke Invitational Friday in Wallace Wade Stadium.

The No. 3 Hokies dominated the women's hammer throw by taking the top three spots in the event. Tech was led by Habazin, who won the event with a school-record mark of 211'11" (64.60m). The previous school record was held by Habazin's teammate, Kristen Callan, who threw for a mark of 206'6" (62.94m) in 2006. Callan followed in second place with a mark of 210'2" (64.05m), while Brittany Pryor was third with a mark of 192'0" (58.52m). All three throwers have already qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships in the event with personal-best performances.

In his season debut for the No. 27 men's team, Matej Muza won the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 225'10" (68.83m) to qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championships in his outdoor season debut.

The Hokies took three of the top five spots in the women's pole vault. Kelly Phillips took second place, clearing a height of 12'11.5" (3.95m). Erin Mahony was third with a height of 12'7.5" (3.85m), and Elise Birnbaum tied for fifth place at 11'11.75" (3.65m). Diana Sciambi earned a 20^th-place finish with a height of 10'11.75" (3.35m).

Billy Berlin turned in a runner-up performance in the 1,500-meter race to lead the Hokies in the seeded section of the event. Berlin turned in a time of 3:49.37, while James Scheiner joined Berlin in the top five with a time of 3:52.49 for fourth place. Eddie Judge and Ryan Witt took 17^th and 18^th place, respectively. Judge finished the race in 3:56.04, wile Witt finished in 3:56.11. Kyle Guglielmo turned in a 21^st-place with a time of 3:56.74.

Tasmin Fanning finished third in the seeded section of the women's 1,500-meter race, with a regional-qualifying time of 4:26.32. Jessica Fanning followed in seventh place with a time of 4:31.26. Kristi Tobin completed the race in a time of 4:37.68 for 11^th place, while Erin Reddan rounded out Tech's presence in the top 25 with a 24^th-place finish in 4:41.98. Jackie Merrick finished the race in 36^th-place with a time of 4:48.82.

Natalie Sherbak earned another runner-up finish for the Hokies in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 9:29.80.

Chris Walizer finished as the runner-up in the developmental section of 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:01.27. Megan Fuson led the way for Tech on the women's side in the event with a time of 4:51.96 for a 12^th-place finish.

Jeff Miller completed the 400-meter dash with 51.02 seconds for 22^nd place in the developmental section of the event.

Jessica Trapeni turned in a sixth-place performance in a time of 18:11.53, while Lindsey King finished 18^th with a time of 18:27.92.

The Hokies' Zach Thomas led a host of Tech runners in the men's 5,000-meter run with a 10^th-place finish in the 'A' section of the event with a personal-best time of 14:47.08. Rider Clauss turned in a time of 14:53.07 to place 14^th. In the 'B' section of the event, Phil Padilla turned in a third-place performance with a personal-best time of 14:51.44, while Chris Padilla followed in 20^th place with a time of 15:26.06. Matt Saunders placed eighth in section 'C' of the event with a time of 15:09.39.

Tech will complete its weekend of competition tomorrow at the Duke Invite and the Murray Neely Invite in Greensboro, N.C.
