Queen Harrison once again established Tech's school record in the 400-meter dash with a 53.87-second performance to claim first place and qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championships. The Richmond, Va., native set the school record for the first time with a 54.35-second time on March 22 at the Hurricane Invitational. Harrison was followed by Britni Spruill's run of 56.00 seconds for seventh place.
Harrison also won the 100-meter hurdles as the Hokies' lone competitor in the event, crossing the finish line 12.92 seconds with a one mile-per-hour wind, which also qualified for the regional championships. Harrison completed the preliminary race in 13.20 seconds.
The Hokies' 4x100-meter relay clocked in with a time of 45.44 seconds to take first place by .11 seconds over runner-up North Carolina. Asia Washington took the event crown in the 800-meter dash, clocking in with a time of 2:11.32.
Kristi Castlin finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.95 seconds with a 1.1 mile-per-hour wind, while Shakirra Pinnock finished 11th in a time of 12.71 seconds. Castlin registered a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:03.95.
Spruill turned in a time of 11.71 seconds in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash, which met the qualifying standard for the regional meet. Castlin had a time of 11.95 seconds and Pinnock's preliminary performance of 12.19 seconds. Pinnock also placed seventh in the finals of 200-meter dash in a time of 24.85 seconds.
Representing Tech's No. 27 men's team, Cedric Hudson turned in a 22.63-second performance for 22nd place in the 200-meter dash. Hudson also registered an 18th-place mark in the long jump with a 21'1.5" (6.44m) effort. Ebenezer Amegashie competed in the 400-meter hurdle race, earning 16th place with a time of 56.42 seconds.
The Hokies travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Sea Ray Relays on Friday and Saturday on the Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
