The previous school-record time was 15:56.68, held by Kristin Price since 2001. Tasmin Fanning broke Price's record by 8.78 seconds and will rank among the top times in the country when the national performance lists are released next week. Natalie Sherbak placed third with a time of 16:53.34.
The majority of the Hokie track & field team stayed in the region and competed at the North Carolina Elite Invitational on Friday at the Irwin Belk Track at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Kristi Castlin led the sixth-ranked women's squad at the North Carolina Elite meet by winning the 100-meter hurdle race with a time of 12.94 seconds. Castlin was followed in second place by Sherlenia Green, who finished the race in 13.78 seconds. Castlin then had a two-mile-per-hour-wind in the 200-meter dash and earned third place after completing the event in a season-best time of 24.01 seconds.
Erin Mahony represented Tech in the field events by winning the pole vault, clearing a season-high height of 13'1.5" (4.00m).
Sophomore Queen Harrison took runner-up honors in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.42 seconds, while Shakirra Pinnock followed in 10th place with a time of 56.80 seconds. Green then registered a team-high finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.99 seconds for third place in her season debut in the event. Asia Washington was awarded fourth place with an identical time, which marked her season-best performance. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Kelly Clark turned in a season-best time of 11:04.02 to take second place.
Freshman Jeff Miller led the way for Tech's No. 35 men's team and was the fourth finisher in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.05. Chris Walizer finished the race in 1:57.44 to finish 17th overall.
In the 1,500-meter run, Eddie Judge registered a season-best effort of 3:49.47. Ryan Witt joined Judge in the race and took 13th place with a time of 3:56.44.
Freshman Ebenezer Amageshie earned fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at a time of 15.34 seconds with a 1.4 mile-per-hour wind. In the 400-meter hurdles, Amegashie placed seventh in a time of 54.44 seconds, which stands as a season-best effort. Nobel Iyebote ran in the 200-meter dash and finished 20th in 22.44 seconds.
Tech will participate in its final meet before the NCAA East Regional Championships next Friday and Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.
