ATLANTA, Ga. - The Virginia Tech track & field program competed Friday during the first day of the Georgia Tech Invitational at George C. Griffin Track to begin its final meet before the NCAA East Regional Championships.

Eight different Hokies turned in regional-qualifying performances in three different events during the meet's first day.

The sixth-ranked women's team's performance was highlighted by the Hokies taking the top three spots in the hammer throw. Dorotea Habazin led the way with a first-place distance of 209'9" (63.93m), while Brittany Pryor recorded a personal best with a mark of 203'5" (62.00m) for second place in the event. Kristen Callan completed the Tech effort in third place with a toss of 199'8" (60.85m).

In the 100-meter hurdle event, Kristi Castlin and Queen Harrison own the top two times in the nation this season and the duo also took the top two times in the preliminaries of this meet. Harrison finished first with a time of 12.93 seconds. Castlin is in the runner-up position with a time of 13.07 seconds heading into tomorrow's final race at 3:40 p.m. Sherlenia Green also qualified for the final race with a time 13.72 seconds, which currently stands fifth overall in the meet.

Tasmin Fanning placed third overall in the 1,500-meter race but was the first collegiate finisher with a season-best time of 4:18.28. A pair of Hokies also registered top-10 finishes. Jessica Fanning was just .01 seconds short of the regional-qualifying time, but earned ninth place with time of 4:27.81. Natalie Sherbak rounded out the top 10 with a time of 4:29.44. Four Hokies ran for Tech in the 1,500-meter event on the men's side, led by Billy Berlin's ninth-place time of 3:47.68. Eddie Judge and Ryan Witt just missed qualifying for the regional meet. Judge missed the standard by .75 seconds with his 11th-place effort in a season-best time of 3:48.55. Witt turned in his best performance of the season, finishing just .05 seconds behind Judge for 12th place in a time of 3:48.90. James Scheiner placed 23rd in a time of 3:55.33.

In other action, Britni Spruill ran in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash and finished the race in 11.94 seconds, and she is currently fifth overall heading into tomorrow's final race at approximately 5:05 p.m.

The No. 35 men's team was led on the track, by Devin Cornwall, who turned in a third-place finish in the men's 5,000-meter race with a time of 14:43.41. Junior Erin Reddan capped the day's action by completing the race in 16:54.87 for fourth place.

Sophomore Kelly Clark was the seventh finisher in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:15.68. Rider Clauss represented the Hokies in the men's side of the event with a 13th-place time of 9:38.97.

Ebenezer Amegashie turned in a 27th-place overall finish in the trials of 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.25 seconds with a 1.7-mile-per-hour wind.

Elise Birnbaum, Erin Mahony and Kelly Phillips kick things off tomorrow at noon for the Hokies in the women's pole vault, followed by Justin Clickett in the men's shot put with Pryor and Erika Schroeder in the women's discus at 1 p.m. Action on the track open's with Tech's 4x100-meter relay competing at 2 p.m.
