Harrison establishes new 400m school record
Sophomore also wins 100m hurdles

ATLANTA, Ga. - Sophomore sprinter Queen Harrison improved her own 400-meter dash school record and the Virginia Tech track & field team wrapped up its final meet before the NCAA East Regional Championships Saturday in the Georgia Tech Invitational at the George C. Griffin Track. Nine different Tech athletes turned in season-best performances in six different events on the final day of competition.

The sixth-ranked women's team's performance was led by Harrison, who reset her 400-meter dash record with a time of 52.88 seconds. The Richmond, Va., native beat her previous record mark by .36 seconds and was the top collegiate finisher in the event. Shakirra Pinnock ran the race in 58.76 seconds and finished 40th. Nobel Iyebote represented Tech in the men's section with a 40th-place finish in a time 50.46 seconds.

The Hokies took three of the top five spots in the women's 100-meter hurdle final, led by Harrison, who took first place with a time of 12.90 seconds. Classmate Kristi Castlin finished .07 seconds behind for second place in a time of 12.97 seconds, while Sherlenia Green took fifth place with a time of 13.59 seconds.

The duo of Green and Asia Washington both turned in season-best performances in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Washington took third place with an effort of 58.39 seconds with Green following closely in a time of 58.55 seconds for fourth place. Ebenezer Amegashie took a 29th-place finish on the men's side with a time of 55.28 seconds.

In the 100-meter dash, Britni Spruill took second place in the final heat with a season-best time of 11.56 seconds, which was just .01 second shy of tying her personal-best time. Spruill then took sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.70 seconds. Castlin followed in 23rd place in a time of 24.32 seconds. Iyebote was the 43rd finisher in the men's race, registering a time of 22.31 seconds.

The Hokies' 4x100-meter relay ran a season-best time of 44.65 seconds to take runner-up honors.

In field events, Brittany Pryor won the shot put with a mark of 50'9.25" (15.47m) in her first attempt. Igor Misljenovic took fourth place in the men's discus with a distance of 168'2" (51.25m) in his final effort of the day.

The No. 35 men's team was led on the track by four runners who competed in the 800-meter dash. Billy Berlin led the way with a sixth-place effort of 1:50.30 that was his fastest time of the season and beat the regional qualifying standard by .10 seconds. Eddie Judge registered a 21st-place finish with a season-best time of 1:53.22 and Ryan Witt followed in 27th with a time of 1:54.16. James Scheiner finished the race in 1:57.93 for 39th place, while Jeff Miller was 43rd with a time of 2:15.63. Tasmin Fanning took 10th place in a personal-best and regional-qualifying time of 2:08.27 to lead the way for the Hokies in the women's race. Her time is the fastest performance for Tech this season by .10 seconds. Jessica Fanning finished 26th with a time of 2:13.01.

The NCAA East Regional Championships will be held May 30 and 31 at Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Fla.
