VT Elite Meet
Olhovsky wins pole vault crown

BLACKSBURG, Va. The Hokies captured two event crowns and achieved several NCAA provisional marks in the final day of the VT Elite Meet at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va., on Saturday.

Senior Queen Harrison highlighted the second day of the meet, much as she did in the opening day. The Richmond, Va., native lowered her school record in the 400-meters, running a 53.54 to win the open section of the event. The time shattered her former Tech record and career best of 53.64, which she set at the Hokie Invitational on Jan. 23.

Senior Yavgeniy Olhovsky continued his dominance in pole vault competitions this year. Olhovsky won his second pole vault title of the year on Saturday, clearing 17-07.75, a season best, while junior Hunter Hall collected his best showing of the season, finishing runner-up with a height of 17-03.75.

Competing in his first meet of 2010, senior Igor Misljenovic wasted no time setting a personal best and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the men’s shot put. Misljenovic tossed 59-09.50 in his final two attempts to place fifth overall. The mark furthers his former career best of 58-10.75 in the event and surpasses the provisional mark of 58-03.

The field events yielded another provisional mark for the Hokies in the men’s triple jump, as sophomore Hasheem Halim leaped a personal-record 51-02.25 to exceed the NCAA standard. The Lilburn, Ga., native joins teammate freshman David Wilson on the NCAA men’s triple jump provisional list. Halim finished fifth in the event.

Sophomore Ogechi Nwaneri concluded yet another successful meet. After running a career best and improving on her provisional mark on Friday night in the 60-meter dash, Nwaneri took second in the invitational section of the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 24.17. Sophomore Keith Ricks earned fifth in the men’s race, timing in at 21.40.

The Hokies closed out the day earning another provisional mark, this time in the women’s 4x400-meter relay. The quartet of Harrison, freshman Yvonne Amegashie, freshman Funmi Alabi and sophomore Aunye Boone clocked a 3:39.81 just missing the school record. The foursome placed second in the event.

Tech returns to action with the Virginia Tech Challenge on Feb. 19-20 in Rector Field House. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
