Three Hokies Earn National All-Academic Team Honors
USTFCCCA Honors Phillips, Castlin, and Washington
July 28, 2010

The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced it’s women’s 2010 Division-I All-Academic Track and Field honorees Wednesday. The list includes three members of the Virginia Tech women’s squad: Kelly Phillips (r-Jr., Blacksburg, Va.), Kristi Castlin (Sr., Douglasville, Ga.), and Asia Washington (Sr., Piscathaway, N.J.).

Phillips is a human nutrition, foods and exercise major at Tech. Of the 551 Academic All-American honorees, Phillips was one of only 28 to have a reported cumulative G.P.A. at or above a 4.0. This season, she earned a season-best height of 13-1.5 in the pole vault at the Liberty Twilight Meet, qualifying for the NCAA East Regionals.

Castlin is a political science major and was named the 2010 ACC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Her 2010 season ended with her finishing fourth in the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA Championships, earning her seventh All-American honor of her career, a Tech record.

Washington, an accounting and information systems manager, finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at the ACC Championships and also qualified for the NCAA East Regional. She also earned a win in the 400-meter hurdles at the Miami Invitational.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.25 and have met either the automatic or provisional qualifying standards for the Division-I Indoor Championships, or have participated in the Division-I Outdoor Championships. All three women were also named to the All-ACC Academic Women’s Track & Field Team in June.

Men’s individual honorees are set to be announced Thursday, while men’s team honors will be announced Monday and women’s teams on Wednesday.
