Hokies win ACC Track Performers of the Week honors

Following its record-setting performances at the Penn Relays last weekend, the Virginia Tech track and field teams won a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Track Performer of the Week accolades, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Hanna Green and Miami’s Shakima Wimbley were named the Women’s Co-Track Performers of the Week, while the men’s 4x800-meter relay team and North Carolina’s Kenny Selmon garnered the ACC Men’s Co-Track Performer of the Week honors.

The men's 4x800-meter relay team made history Saturday at the Penn Relays held in Philadelphia, as the quartet of Drew Piazza, Neil Gourley, Patrick Joseph and Vincent Ciattei won the event in the College Championship of America Invitational division. The group set a school record in winning with a time of 7 minutes, 13.75 seconds, besting the previous school mark by a blistering 7.53 seconds. The title marked the Hokies’ first at the Penn Relays in school history.

Piazza earned his second weekly honor of the season and the third of his career, while Gourley, Joseph and Ciattei were honored by the league for the first time in their careers.

Additionally, Green ran the mile outdoors for the first time in her four-year career, placing second in the Olympic Development mile run. Green notched a school-record time of 4:32.50. When converted to 1,500 meters, Green’s time is listed at 4:12.31. That time currently ranks first in the ACC and third nationally. It also marks a new school record in the event, breaking teammate Shannon Morton’s time of 4:13.29 set in 2014. All-in-all, the five-time All-American set two new schools in one event.

Of note, today’s honor is the second career weekly award for Green.

Florida State also swept this week’s ACC Field Performer of the Week honors, with jumper Ed’Ricus Williams recognized on the men’s side and thrower Kellion Knibb on the women’s side.

Looking ahead, the Hokie sprinters will wrap up their regular season Wednesday evening at the Liberty Twilight meet. The distance runners and pole vaulters will conclude their regular season Thursday evening at the Hokie Twilight meet held in Blacksburg.
