Dear Potential Virginia Tech Student Athlete:

In preparation for the beginning of the 2007-08 academic year and your participation in intercollegiate athletics, we have developed this website to give you the following information which will explain our health care program and tell you what your responsibilities are to become eligible for participation.

The Virginia Tech Sports Medicine team has a full complement of health care professionals to tend to any illness or injury. As a full time student, you can also take advantage of the benefits provided by the Schiffert Health Center. With ten health care providers, a pharmacy and laboratory facilities, most health services are covered by University Student fees. X-ray services and some medications are provided at an additional fee.

Before you can participate in any activity associated with Intercollegiate Athletics you are required to have immunizations as noted on the Schiffert Health Center web site and have a physical examination performed by the University Team Physicians. Physical examinations are performed as a team, coordinated with each teams report date back to campus. Neither physical exams performed by other physicians nor the medical information provided to Student Health Services will serve as an athletic physical. Date and location of your team's physical exam.

Our insurance program is an excess plan. You provide your own primary health insurance coverage. If there is a claim, your insurance will pay until your benefits have been exhausted. Our excess policy may cover the remaining amount. The athletics department insurance will not participate in any claims that are pre-existing or those that are not associated with the practice or play of intercollegiate athletics. More information about the Athletics Department insurance policy.

If you are a returning athlete or have ever tried out for a varsity team, you are required to update you Student Insurance Form before your physical examination, This can be done through this web site by clicking Returning Athlete. If you fail to complete this update on-line it may cause you to miss the first few team workouts while your paperwork is completed.

If you are a new student in the program and have never tried out for a varsity sport at Virginia Tech, you must complete your Student Insurance Form through this web site by clicking New Athlete. We also ask that you provide a copy of your health insurance card as well as your prescription drug coverage information at your team physical. Participation will not be allowed until your insurance information is on file.

If you have any questions, please contact one of our staff at (540) 231-6410

Thanks for your assistance.

Sincerely,
