What Vick Did
vs. Akron
Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick picked up his collegiate football career much in the way he finished his freshman campaign last year in the Sugar Bowl - with a dazzling performance.
Vick had to wait an extra week to resume his quest for the Heisman Trophy after last Sunday's scheduled game against Georgia Tech was cancelled. But the redshirt sophomore showed no ill effects from the layoff as he came out Saturday and led the Hokies to a 52-23 victory over Akron at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field. Playing in just three quarters, Vick threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns on 7-of-11 passing and ran for another 102 yards with two scores.
The Newport News, Va., native had a spectacular 63-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and also had a 16-yard rushing score on Tech's opening drive. He hit wide receivers Emmett Johnson (59 yards) and André Davis (34 yards) to account for his passing scores.
Vick and the Hokies (1-0) return to action Thursday night as they take on East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
