Ask Michael A Question

Damian from Poquoson, Va. asks: (Nov. 1, 2000)
You still have at least three games left, including the bowl. How does being available for those final games play on your mind? Does re-injuring the ankle by coming back to soon and possibly being out for the year affect your decision?

Joe from Bowie, MD asks: (Oct 18, 2000)
From time to time I have noticed you thumping your chest three times and pointing up after making a big play or scoring a touchdown. What is your reason for doing that?

Steve from Pepperell, MA asks: (Sep 27, 2000)
Michael,
I've been coaching high School football for 6 years. Some of my best players have always said they have learned a great deal from watching college players. What do you think is the best tip a young athlete could pick up from you?

Thanks,
Coach Maguire

Chad from Minneapolis, MN asks: (Sep 13, 2000)
I don't know if you have been asked this before, but I'll give it a try. Michael, you are admired by so many, even your opponents. There was a lot of hype surrounding you throughout the entire preseason about how you were going to do when the season started. That's not to mention the stresses that school can have on an athlete. My fellow Division II teamates and I are dying to know how you handle all of the pressure. Maybe you'll help us out.

By the way, we are so inspired by you that we are all looking for a pit bull to be our team mascot. We all look up to you for your accomplishments. Keep it going and have a great season. Your No. 1 Division II fans from the South Carolina State football team.

Buddy from Dallas, Texas asks: (Sep 6, 2000)
In all of the articles that I have read about you, most of them have a common theme. That theme is how strong you are. I was wondering what your work ethic is when it comes to working out? What does your schedule at the gym consist of from day to day?

Nick from Wilson, NC asks: (Aug 29, 2000)
I'm a VPI grad, but live in NC and go to all of the UNC games. Ronald Curry has shown some promise, but struggled with his performance and injuries. He was thrown in at QB his very first game. You were able to redshirt your first year and it seems to have really paid off. Should QBs redshirt their first year to learn the college system, and how did it benefit you?

Ann from Roanoke, VA asks: (Aug 23, 2000)
First, let me congratulate you on a wonderful season last year. I look forward to seeing your excellent skills again on the field this year. My question for you is one that my students and I discussed about you during the school year last season. What was/is your inspiration in playing football? My students and I believe that you play with such enthusiasm and drive and we would love knowing what pushes you.

Andy from Roanoke asks: (Aug 16, 2000)
As a high school and junior high school coach, I am always telling my players that they have to do more to improve their game then just what we do at practice. How much time do you spend making yourself a better player away from the practice field?

Brian from Greenville asks: (Aug 16, 2000)
Michael, is there any significance to the number 7? Did you ask for that because of something, or was it just the number they had left?

Carl from Glen Allen asks: (Aug 6, 2000)
Michael, we all know what you can do on the field. What are your favorite activities away from the gridiron?

Allison in Roanoke asks: (Aug 2, 2000)
This time last year, you were the question mark going into the season. This year, you're the star. You've been getting a lot of media attention. How has your life changed, off the field, in the past year and I was wondering if you ever get annoyed by allm of the attention or do you enjoy it? Also, with football being a year-round sport, do you miss going home to see your family and how do you deal with it?
