Former assistant has been a part of five consecutive NCAA Tournament teams
February 28, 2000
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech Athletics Department announced Monday afternoon the hiring of Greg Smith as the new head volleyball coach, effective March 1, 2000.
Smith comes to Virginia Tech from Ohio State, where he has served as an assistant coach to Jim Stone the past three seasons. He helped coach the Buckeyes to the NCAA Tournament each year. His duties included assisting in recruiting and training the team, both on the court and in their physical conditioning.
"I think Greg will do a great job," Stone said. "He's paid his dues and has worked his way up as an assistant at three different schools. He's ready to run his own ship and will turn the Virginia Tech program around.
"Greg's a good recruiter who's good with people and is also a good P.R. person. The players will like him a lot and will work hard for him. He will bring a lot of positives to the Virginia Tech program."
Prior to his stint in Columbus, Smith spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Hofstra University. While at Hofstra, he helped lead the team to two consecutive American East Conference tournament championships and two NCAA tournament appearances. In all, Smith has coached in the NCAA Tournament each of the last five seasons.
"This is a great opportunity to come into a program with the potential for a lot of growth," Smith said. "All of the things I saw from both the academic and athletic sides were positive and there are a lot of aspects in place for this program to go to a higher level. I'm thrilled about playing in the BIG EAST Conference and look forward to taking the Virginia Tech volleyball program in a new and exciting direction."
The Rochester, Ind., native graduated from Westmont College in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in business and economics. He also received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Indianapolis in April of 1995. A letterwinner in tennis at Westmont College, Smith also served as an assistant basketball coach at his alma mater.
Smith replaces former head coach Stephanie Hawbecker. Virginia Tech, which will play an independent schedule before joining the Big East in 2001, went 9-19 last season.
