Undefeated Virginia Too Much For Tech

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia Tech volleyball team was defeated by in-state rival Virginia, 3-1, Tuesday evening at Memorial Gymnasium. The Hokies lost the first two games, 30-19 and 20-26, but came back to win game three, 30-27. Despite the late effort, Tech lost the fourth game, 30-25. Setter Melissa Markowski nearly recorded a triple-double, but fell one kill shy. She had nine kills to go along with 41 assists and 12 digs. Kaitlin McPeak and Ashley Bayer added 13 and 12 digs, respectively. Junior Annie Spicer fired 22 kills, just three shy of her season-high 25. To complete her fifth double-double of the year, Spicer added 10 digs. The Cavaliers posted a .283 hitting percentage while Virginia Tech hit at a .160 clip. UVa notched 71 kills compared to Tech's 57. Virginia also held 15-7 advantage in team blocks, while the Hokies had one more dig than UVa (62-61). Tech falls to 4-4 on the year while Virginia, 8-0, remains undefeated. The Hokies return to action on Friday, Sept. 12, whey they travel to College Park, Md., to participate in the Maryland Invitational. On Friday, Tech will take on the College of Charleston at 11 a.m., and Morgan State at 5:30. The Hokies will then wrap-up the two-day tournament with host Maryland at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 13.
