Tech Sweeps NC State 3-0
Katie Esbrook leads team with 13 kills

Raleigh, N.C. - Behind a team-high 13 kills from junior Katie Esbrook (Lake In The Hills, Ill.), the Virginia Tech volleyball team defeated NC State 3-0 in a hard-fought Atlantic Coast Conference contest.

The Hokies (6-5, 1-1 ACC) won by scores of 30-25, 30-25 and 30-28.

With 14 ties and five lead changes in game one, the two teams battled until Tech gained the upper hand in the final points. With the score tied at 25, the Hokies scored the last five points of the contest for the 30-25 victory. Sophomore Jen Albrecht (Canandaigua, N.Y.) had a kill and the first service ace of her career for two points, while Esbrook and senior Erin Brugger (Clifton, Va.) each had a kill.

In game two, the score was tied at 17 before kills by freshman Sarah Muņoz (Encinitas, Calif.) and junior Allie Kupec (Columbia, Md.), as well as a service ace from Munoz, gave the Hokies a 20-18 lead that they would hold for the remainder of the contest, taking the 30-25 win.

Tech came back from a five point deficit late in game three for the sweep. With the Wolfpack leading 23-18, the Hokies slowly climbed out of the hole by outscoring their opponents 9-4 to tie the game at 27. Junior Kendra Sytsma (Madison, Wis.) had three kills during the run, while two straight kills from sophomore Jen Albrecht tied the game and pulled Tech to the lead which they would not relinquish, winning the game 30-28.

In addition to Esbrook's 13 kills, she had nine digs. Kupec was also in double figures with 10 kills.

Senior Melissa Markowski (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) led the team with 45 assists, while sophomore libero Amanda Cloyd (Muncie, Ind.) had a team leading 15 digs.

Other strong performers for the Hokies included Brugger with eight kills and 11 digs, and Munoz, who totaled seven kills and 10 digs.

For the Wolfpack (6-4, 0-2 ACC), Stefani Eddins and Karlie Urbaniak each had seven kills. Kelley Blakewood had a team-high 12 digs, while Lyssa Ramirez totaled 13 assists.

After eight straight matches on the road, Tech returns to Cassell Coliseum on Friday, Sept. 30 to face Maryland at 7 p.m.
