Tech Defeats Georgetown 3-0 in Season Opener
Esbrook, Muñoz combine for 19 kills in victory

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech volleyball team defeated Georgetown in straight sets, 30-16, 30-24 and 30-16 to open the season at the Hokie Invitational on Friday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
Junior Katie Esbrook (Lake In The Hills, Ill.) led the Hokies (1-0) with 11 kills. Junior Allie Kupec (Columbia, Md.) and sophomore Jen Albrecht (Canandaigua, N.Y.) each had seven kills. Kupec also had six block assists.
Freshman Sarah Muņoz (Encinitas, Calif.) was strong for Tech in her collegiate debut. Starting all three games, she totaled eight killls, three service aces, and six digs.
On defense, sophomore Amanda Cloyd (Munice, Ind.) led the team with 14 digs. Senior Melissa Markowski (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) had a team-leading 38 assists, with five digs.
Other top players included sophomore Rachel Dulla (St.
Charles, Ill.) with three service aces and three digs, and junior Kendra Sytsma (Madison,
Wis.), who had five kills.
For the Hoyas (2-1), Jenny Weed led the team with 10 kills. Rachel Nelson totaled eight kills. Katie Nulty had a team-leading five digs, while Caitlin Boland led the team with 19 assists.
In other action at the Hokie Invite, the Mississippi State Bulldogs won a tough four-game set, 30-28, 38-36, 30-24, and 34-32 against the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers in the first match of the evening.
The Bulldogs (2-0) were led by Orshi Kriegel with 23 kills and 18 digs. Rachel Cooper had 16 kils and 19 digs, while Eva Kriegel had a triple-double with 12 kills, 41 assists and 15 digs.
For the Panthers (2-2), Cheryl Hegemann spiked 23 kills and had 18 digs.
Leanne Felsing had her third triple-double of the season with 14 kills,
16 assists and 20 digs.
The Hokies next take on Wisconsin-Milwaukee at noon on Saturday, Sept. 3 in game four of the tournament, before ending the day with Mississippi State at 7 p.m. Other games include Mississippi State against Georgetown at 10 a.m., and Georgetown vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 5 p.m.
