Blacksburg, Va. - The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell 3-0 to the Maryland Terrapins on Friday evening by the scores of 30-22, 30-18 and 30-23, in an Atlantic Coast Conference match.

Junior Allie Kupec (Columbia, Md.) led the Hokies (6-6, 1-2 ACC) with 10 kills. She also had one block. Junior Katie Esbrook (Lake In The Hills, Ill.) and senior Erin Brugger (Clifton, Va.) each had nine kills.

Attack errors hurt Tech during the match. The Hokies had 28 attack errors with a hitting percentage of .148, while Maryland had seven attack errors, and hit .429. The Terps had a slight advantage in total kills, 46-44. Tech had a 33-27 advantage in digs.

In game one, with the score tied at 13, Maryland (13-0, 4-0 ACC) went on an 8-3 run to take a six point lead, 22-16. Six of Maryland's points during the run were scored from Virginia Tech errors. The Terps would hold the lead steady for a 30-22 win.

With the score tied at 10 in game two, a 10-2 run for Maryland gave the Terps a 20-12 lead that they would hold for the remainder of the contest, taking game three 30-18. Esbrook had five kills in the second game for the Hokies.

In game three, the Hokies pulled out to an early five point lead, 13-8. Brugger and freshman Sarah Muņoz (Encinitas, Calif.) each had three kills to give Tech the lead, and Esbrook added two kills.

Maryland came back with a 7-2 run to tie the game at 15. The lead went back and forth for the next several points. With the score tied again at 19, the Terps went on a four-point run to take a 23-19 lead, which they held for the remainder of the contest. Three of the four points came from Tech attack errors. Maryland won game three 30-23.

Sophomore Amanda Cloyd (Muncie, Ind.) totaled a team-high 13 digs, while senior Melissa Markowski (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) paced the Hokies with 37 assists.

For Maryland, Rachel Wagener led the Terps with nine kills and a .471 hitting percentage. Stephanie Doiron had nine digs. Teryn Papp and Tedi Doucet shared the setting duties, with 19 and 14 respectively.

The Hokies return to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 in Cassell Coliseum against Boston College. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
