May 22, 2006
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech athletic department has announced that head volleyball coach Greg Smith has accepted a position as an assistant volleyball coach at Notre Dame.
"We thank Greg for his dedication for Virginia Tech and wish him well in his future endeavors at Notre Dame," said Jim Weaver, Virginia Tech Director of Athletics.
In six years at Virginia Tech, Smith earned a 68-76 record and a 29-24 record in conference play, coaching the Hokies in both the BIG EAST and Atlantic Coast conferences. He was named the 2002 BIG EAST Coach of the Year after Tech nearly doubled its win total from the previous season. Several players earned all-conference honors under Smith, including Katie Esbrook, Annie Spicer, Cheryl Stinson and Ana Lang.
Smith served as an assistant coach at Ohio State, Hofstra, and Indianapolis before coming to Virginia Tech.
"The six years I have been at Virginia Tech have been great," said Smith. "It was a difficult decision to leave the program. I appreciate the support that I have received from the administration for the program, and I will always look fondly upon the past six seasons."
A national search for a head volleyball coach will begin immediately.
