Tech defeats Furman 3-1 in season opener
Parrish leads Hokie attack with 23 kills

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Virginia Tech volleyball team defeated Furman in four games, 30-21, 30-28, 25-30 and 30-18 to open the season at the East Carolina Tournament on Friday evening at Minges Coliseum.
Freshman Taylor Parrish (Brentwood, Tenn.) was strong for Tech in her collegiate debut leading the offense with 23 kills. Sophomore Sarah Muņoz (Encinitas, Calif.) landed 10 kills and picked up 15 digs in the win.
On defense, junior Amanda Cloyd (Muncie, Ind.) led the team with 18 digs, while freshman Michelle Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) paced the Hokies attack with 45 assists and two service aces.
Other key contributors were junior Jen Albrecht (Canandaigua, N.Y.), who added six kills and four block assists and senior Allie Kupec (Columbia, Md.), who contributed five block assists.
For Furman, Chibuzo Aguocha led the Paladins with 22 kills, two service aces, one solo block and three block assists. Alison West chipped in 12 kills while Courtney Stewardson added 40 assists. Stephanie Smith and Kim Tonkin paced the defense with 26 digs combined.
The Hokies will return to action tomorrow, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m., against William & Mary and at 7 p.m., against East Carolina.
