BLACKSBURG, Va. - First year head coach Chris Riley led his Virginia Tech volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of the East Carolina Tournament Saturday night. Tech won the tournament with a 3-1 (27-30, 30-24, 30-26, 30-27) win over East Carolina.

Freshman Taylor Parrish (Brentwood, Tenn.) was named tournament MVP honors with 44 total kills and eight digs in three matches. Freshman setter Michelle Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) and senior middle hitter Katie Esbrook (Lake In The Hills, Ill.) were named to the 2006 ECU Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Against the Pirates, sophomore Sarah Muņoz (Encinitas, Calif.) led the way with 14 kills and added nine digs, while Esbrook and Parrish each knocked down 11 kills. Junior Jen Albrecht (Canandaigua, N.Y.) added nine.

Junior Amanda Cloyd (Muncie, Ind.) led the defense with 22 digs, while Lang dished out 51 assists and led the team with one solo block and five block assists. Senior Allie Kupec (Columbia, Md.) added six block assists.

For the Pirates, three players posted double-doubles. Kelley Wernert led the attack with 17 kills and added 12 digs, Stephanie Turner led the defense with 21 digs and added 12 kills and setter Heidi Krug dished out 58 assists and picked up 13 digs.

Virginia Tech, recovering from an eight point opening run of the Pirates that led to a 27-30 first game loss, never trailed in the second game after tying the game at two. The Hokies coasted to a 30-24 win when Cloyd's first of four service aces broke the tie. It took more effort in a third game win, as Tech trailed up until tying the game at 24 and again at 25. The Hokies then scored five of the next six points and sealed the match, and tournament win on a kill by Kupec.

Tech returns to action Sept. 1-2 at the Auburn Tournament. The Hokies begin play in the tournament on Friday, Sept. 1 at 4:00 p.m., against Purdue. On Saturday, Sept. 2, Tech plays Auburn at noon and Arizona State and 4:00 p.m.
