Tech sweeps Hokie Invite to claim tournament title
Parrish named MVP, Lang and Cloyd named to All-Tournament Team

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech volleyball team picked up the Hokie Fall Invitational championship title with a close 3-2 (28-30, 30-28, 33-35, 30-21, 15-10) win over Appalachian State Saturday evening. Freshman Taylor Parrish earned MVP honors for the second time this season after knocking down a team-high 48 kills in the three matches. Junior Amanda Cloyd and freshman Michelle Lang were named to the All-Tournament Team.
In the three matches, Cloyd led the defense with 68 digs and made only one error on 74 serve receptions. Lang dished out 140 assists throughout tournament play.
Parrish and sophomore Michelle Munoz both posted double-doubles in the championship game against the Mountaineers. Parrish knocked down 20 kills and picked up 16 digs, while Muņoz had 11 kills and 19 digs.
Senior Katie Esbrook and Jen Albrecht each had 14 kills for Tech.
Cloyd paced a strong defense with 28 digs and junior Rachel Dulla added 16. Lang handed out 55 assists.
For the Mountaineers, Brittany Zahn, Chrissy Finch and All-Tournament pick Lorelle Rau each registered double-doubles. Zahn landed 17 kills and 10 digs, Finch had 12 kills and 10 digs and Rau had 51 assists and 17 digs. Cassie Engelgau picked up 31 digs to earn All-Tournament team honors.
In Tech's first game of the day, the Hokies picked up a 3-1 win over Liberty with scores of 30-22, 23-30, 30-23 and 30-28. Tech was led by Munoz, who had a double-double in both games of the day. Against the Flames, she knocked down 12 kills and picked up 13 digs.
Parrish led the offense with 13 kills and Cloyd led the defense with 27 digs, while Lang set up the offense with 37 assists.
Liberty's leaders included Mary Alice Pike and Alysson Sanders who led the team with double-doubles. Pike had 11 kills and 10 digs while Sanders had 10 kills and 11 digs.
In other tournament action, George Washington took third place with a win over Liberty. The Colonials were led by All-Tournament team selection Juliene McLaughlin, who knocked down 43 kills in GW's three matches.
Liberty took fourth place and was led by freshman Kallie Corbin, who handed out 99 assists for the Flames' throughout the tournament.
Tech will take the court again this Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m., as they take on in-state rival, Virginia, at Cassell Coliseum.
