Hokies rally for 3-1 win over Miami
Esbrook lands a season-high 18 kills

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech volleyball team won the first game and dropped the second before rallying to win the final two games in a 3-1 win over Miami Saturday evening. The Hokies improve to 11-8 on the season, 5-5 in the ACC, while the Hurricanes fall to 6-12 overall, 3-6 in the ACC.

The Hokies had season-highs with 75 kills, a .295 attack percentage and 63 assists on the evening. Senior Katie Esbrook led the attack with a match-high 18 kills. Freshman Taylor Parrish chipped in 16 kills, while sophomore Sarah Muņoz registered her ninth double-double this season with 13 kills and 11 digs.

Junior Amanda Cloyd picked up a match-high 22 digs and freshman Michelle Lang dished out a personal-best 56 assists. Lang had a team-high four blocks and hit. 636 on the night, posting seven kills on eight attempts with no errors.

Senior Kendra Sytsma hit a season-high .417, contributing seven kills. Junior Jen Albrecht and senior Allie Kupec also had seven kills.

Francheska Savage led the Hurricanes with 13 kills and a match-high seven blocks. Ann Gallo and Lauren Rinderknecht picked up 16 and 14 digs, respectively, while Jill Robinson handed out 43 assists.

Tech out-hit Miami .295 to .167 and had 75 kills compared to the Hurricanes' 58. The Hokies led in digs, 64-58, but were out-blocked 10-8.

The Hokies jumped out to an early 10-2 in game one and never looked back as they took a 30-23 win. Miami took an early 5-1 lead in game two and maintained the lead until Tech called a timeout at 23-18. Esbrook landed three kills in the next five points to cut the lead to 24-22. The Hokies fought to tie the score at 28, but a kill and service ace from Genevieve Mayhew gave the Hurricanes a game two win, 30-28.

Tech, again, gained an early lead in game three at 7-1 and never looked back. The Hokies continued to extend their lead through the game, coasting to a 30-19 win.

Game four proved to be much closer as there were 13 tie scores and five lead changes. Parrish found the floor late in the game to put the Hokies up one, at 28-27. A block by Munoz and Kupec gave the Hokies a two-point lead and a match-point opportunity. A Hurricane block by Ashley Woods and Angelica Ellis kept the Hurricanes in the game at 29-28, but Albrecht knocked down one final kill for the match win at 30-28.

The Hokies return to action next Friday, October 20 with a 7 p.m. match against Georgia Tech in Blacksburg.
