Tech falls to Duke in three games
Hokies host Wake in final home match Saturday evening

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Although the Hokies held an early lead in all three games, the Duke volleyball team strung together late runs to be lifted over Virginia Tech, 3-0, in Cassell Coliseum Friday evening, by scores of 30-28, 30-23, 30-22. The Hokies fall to 15-13 on the season and 9-10 in ACC contests. The Blue Devils improve to 25-3 overall and 18-1 in conference matches.

Tech's outside hitters, freshman Taylor Parrish and sophomore Sarah Muņoz combined for 18 kills for the Hokies, while senior middle hitters Allie Kupec and Katie Esbrook each contributed eight.

Freshman Michelle Lang recorded her seventh double-double this season, dishing out 33 assists and collecting 11 digs. Junior Amanda Cloyd led the defense with 12 digs, while Parrish and Munoz picked up 11 and 10, respectively.

For Duke, Carrie DeMange landed nine kills and had 11 digs, while Rachael Moss picked up 10 digs with five aces. Jenny Shull led all players with 14 digs on the night.

The Hokies opened the match on a 5-0 run and extended their lead to seven at 11-6. Despite maintaining the seven point lead until 20-13, the Blue Devils used two late runs, of five and seven, to lift them over the Hokies for a game one victory of 30-28.

Both teams fought for a lead in game two, before Duke strung together six points to even the score at 9 and put them up 13-9. From there, the Blue Devils coasted to a 30-23 game two win.

Even though the Hokies opened game three with an 11-8 advantage, another late six-point run of the Blue Devils' put them up 21-17. Duke ended the game, and match, on a 9-5 run to win 30-22.

The Hokies will honor its junior, Rachel Dulla, and three seniors, Allie Kupec, Katie Esbrook and Kendra Sytsma, before their final home match tomorrow evening. Tech will host Wake Forest in a 6 p.m. contest.
