CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball squad won the first two sets against North Carolina on Thursday night, but the Tar Heels rallied to win the next three and steal the match 3-2 (25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 16-25, 10-15) at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Hokies got off to a good start in set one, winning the first three points and pushing the advantage out to 15-12. The Tar Heels stayed poised though, and reeled out four straight points, two on kills by Christine Vaughen, to take the lead 16-15. Following a timeout by Tech head coach Chris Riley, the Hokies won six of the next eight points and used the momentum to keep the advantage the rest of the way. A service error by
Another fast start helped Tech cruise in the second set. The Hokies won six of the first seven points, and maintained the advantage for the rest of the stanza. The Tar Heels would not get within two points again, and another service error from the Heels ended set two in Tech’s favor, 25-19.
In set three, the Hokies followed the same pattern as the first two frames. Tech jumped out to a fast start and won the first three points of the period. The Tar Heels rallied though, to even the frame at seven apiece, and then took their second lead of the match at 15-13.
Tech won the first two points of set five, but
Freshman Justine Record recorded a double-double in the match, leading the team with 18 kills and registering 16 digs in the effort. Junior Jill Gergen set a career best with 25 digs, while Sarah Muñoz and Amy Wengrenovich tallied 13 and 10 digs respectively. Sophomore Felicia Willoughby added 11 kills and seven blocks, and freshman Erin Leaser dished out 48 assists in the contest.
