Hokies swept by Clemson to end tough road trip

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball squad ended its road trip with a loss to Clemson 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-11) Saturday night at Jervey Gym in Clemson, S.C.

The Hokies (17-7, 8-5 ACC) hit a season-low .030 in the match, while the Tigers (18-6, 10-3) struck at a .322 clip. Sophomore Felicia Willoughby tallied six kills on a .286 hitting percentage and added two blocks.

Clemson reached the 10-point mark first in the opening frame, racing out to a 10-7 lead, but the Hokies stayed close. With the lead 14-13, the Tigers reeled off three straight points to open up an advantage they would not relinquish. The Hokies rallied late to cut the lead to two at 20-18, but Clemson came out of a timeout with three straight points and rode the advantage to a 25-20 win in set one.

Tech dug themselves an early hole in set two, as the Tigers opened the stanza with five consecutive points. The Hokies tried to narrow the gap, but could never overcome the early defecit, falling 25-20 in the second frame. Clemson blocked five Tech attacks and hit .304 in the frame.

In the third set, the Hokies fell behind 2-6, but proved resilient to pull even at seven apiece. Clemson exploded at that point, and quickly established control of the set. The Tigers won 18 of the next 22 points to capture the third stanza, 25-11, and the match 3-0.

Tech looks to regroup next weekend, as the squad returns home to play host to NC State and North Carolina on Nov. 7 and 8 respectively. Results for the matches will be posted on
