WASHINGTON, D.C. For the second consecutive match, the Virginia Tech volleyball squad saw victory over an undefeated team, sweeping Yale (25-21, 25-15, 26-24) in its second match of the American Tournament in Bender Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Tech (8-0, 0-0 ACC) brought a balanced attack to the court, as nine different Hokies recorded a kill in the affair. Junior Felicia Willoughby and freshman Jennifer Wiker both registered eight kills and two blocks to lead Tech. Sophomore Erin Leaser dished out 29 assists, and senior Jill Gergen earned 10 digs.

Yale (4-1, 0-0 Ivy) and Tech battled from start to finish in the first set. The Hokies led by only two points at 20-18, but two setting errors late in the frame by the Bulldogs doomed Yale in the period, as Tech won the opening set, 25-21.

The Hokies then ran away with the second set. After doubling the Bulldogs point total at 12-6, Tech went on an 8-3 run to extend out to a 20-9 lead. Yale could not manage a comeback as the Hokies captured set two, 25-15.

Yale would not fall easily, though, putting up a fight in a competitive third set. The final period featured 18 tie scores and 10 lead changes. No team led by more than two points in the frame until the Hokies took advantage of an attack error by Yale’s Haley Wessels, which gave Tech some breathing room at 24-21. Following a Bulldog timeout, Yale went on a 3-0 run to even the set at 24 apiece, but a Taylor Parrish kill and an attack error by Yale’s Cat Dailey, sealed the period for the Hokies, 26-24, and the match, 3-0.

The Hokies hit .260 in the match, and saw their six-match streak of holding their opponents under a .200 hitting percentage snapped, as Yale struck at a .228 clip. Tech blocked six attacks, while Yale stuffed five of their own.

Tech will wrap up the American Tournament tonight against American at 7 p.m. American fell to Yale last night, 3-1. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
