Tech trumps LIU Brooklyn in straight sets

BLACKSBURG – Dominating both sides of the ball, the Virginia Tech volleyball team topped LIU Brooklyn in straight sets on the newly named Carilion Court on Friday night, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18. The Hokies improve to 2-0 after back-to-back sweeps, setting back the Blackbirds to 0-1.

Freshman Jaila Tolbert found her niche as a Hokie, downing nine kills with a .750 attacking percentage. Outside Hitter Amanda McKinzie led the Hokies’ offense with 11 kills. Lindsey Owens and Kenedy McGrath commanded Tech’s defense with 10 digs apiece. Rhegan Mitchell set 18 of the Hokies’ 36 total assists. The Hokies attacked at a .419 clip through three sets, holding the Blackbirds at a mere .087.

Tamara Ignjic and Viktoria Fink led the Blackbirds, both tallying double-digit kills in LIU’s season opener.

The Hokies started off strong as Owens and Tolbert tallied three kills each with the squad attacking at a .344 rate. McGrath collected six digs in the Hokies’ 25-16 win.

Tech controlled the floor in the second stanza of the match, posting an impressive .548 attack percentage over LIU Brooklyn. Tolbert was a perfect 4-for-4 in the frame. McKinzie dominated both sides of the ball with four kills and digs each. Kennedy Bryan, Cara Cunningham, and Owens added three kills apiece in the Hokies’ 25-14 rout.

Despite the Blackbirds’ valiant efforts in the final set, the Hokies’ prevailed over a 13-all score to walk away with the 25-18 victory.

Virginia Tech closes out the Radford/Virginia Tech Invitational tomorrow at noon, taking on the Elon Phoenix.
