This new $21 million practice facility is adjacent to the east side of Cassell Coliseum. The 49,000 square-foot facility contains the best in everything basketball programs could ever want, from spacious locker rooms that include film classrooms, to lounges that feature computer stations and large flat-screen televisions. Cassell Coliseum has become known as one of the top college basketball environments in the nation. For more than half a century, exciting games have been the norm in “The Cassell.” More than 4.5 million fans have packed the coliseum to see great players, great teams and outstanding basketball. No conference has compiled a better NCAA Tournament record than the ACC. Since the inaugural tournament in 1939, league teams have posted an NCAA Tournament-best mark of 364-188 for a sterling .659 winning percentage against the nation’s toughest competition. Over the past 12 years (2001-2012), the ACC has won an NCAA-best five National Championships ... the Big East and SEC are tied for second with three. The ACC is second among all conferences with 42 Final Four appearances ... the Big Ten has 43 leads.
The Hokies participate in several community service events throughout the year with the two biggest events being special games for Play4Kay and To Write Love on Her Arms charities.
The Play4Kay initiative is an opportunity for women's basketball coaches and teams around the nation to raise awareness for breast cancer while benefitting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The 2012-13 Play4Kay dates are February 8-18. During that timeteams and coaches will wear pink gear for games to help raise awareness.
To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also invest directly into treatment and recovery. The Virginia Tech women¹s basketball team, in conjunction with the student-run university chapter here at Tech, has teamed up to spread the word to the fans about this organization. The Hokies will host a game this season to bring awareness to this worthy cause.
